Gilly died Saturday in Branson, Missouri, where he helped run the Mickey Gilly Grand Shanghai Theater.

He was performing as recently as last month, but his health was bad last week.

According to a statement from Mickey Gilly Associates, "he passed peacefully with his family and close friends."

Overall, he had 39 top 10 country hits and 17 No. 1 songs. He has received six Academy of Country Music Awards, and has also acted as an actor.

"If I had a wish in my life, I would wish for more time," Gilly told the Associated Press as he celebrated his 65th birthday in March 2001.
